1. Announcing the Number of People  / 人数を伝えるとき

1. "Sumimasen, (number) person." 

   • Japanese: すみません、〇〇名です。

   • Reading: Sumimasen, (number)-mei desu.

2. "Just me."

   • Japanese: 1人です。 

   • Reading: Hitori desu. /　Ichi-mei desu.

3. "Is there a table available for (number)?" 

   • Japanese: 〇〇名です。座れる席はありますか？

   • Reading: 〇〇-mei de su. Suwareru seki wa arimasu ka? 

• Key Vocabulary / 単語: 

  1. すみません (Sumimasen) ＝ Excuse me / Sorry 

  2. 名  (-mei) ＝ Person/Counter for people

  3. 席 (Seki) = Seat

 How to Count People / 人数の数え方

• 1 person:  1名 (Ichi-mei) / 一人 (Hitori)

• 2 people:  2名 (Ni-mei) / 二人 (Futari)

• 3 people:  3名 (San-mei)

• 4 people:  4名 (Yon-mei)

• 5 people:  5名 (Go-mei)

• Tip: You can simply use your fingers to show the number. If you are alone, say "Hitori desu" (1人です) and "Futari desu" (2 people), 

2. Asking for an English Menu  / メニューを確認するとき

1. "Do you have an English menu?"

   • Japanese: 英語のメニューはありますか？

   • Reading: Eigo no menyū wa arimasu ka ?

2. What do you recommend? 

   • Japanese: おすすめは何ですか？ 

   • Reading: Osusume wa nan desu ka? 

3. I'll leave it to you. / Chef's choice, please. 

   • Japanese: お任せでお願いします。 

   • Reading: Omakase de onegai-shimasu. 

4. My budget is about (amount) yen 

   • Japanese: 予算は〇〇円くらいでお願いします。

How to Count Prices (Yen) 

• 5,000 yen: 5,000円 / 五千円 (Gosen-en)

•  6,000 yen : 6,000円 / 六千円 (Rokusen-en ) 

• 7,000 yen : 7,000円 / 七千円 (Nanasen-en )

• 8,000 yen : 8,000円 / 八千円 (Hassen-en )

• 9,000 yen : 9,000円 / 九千円 (Kyūsen-en ) 

• 10,000 yen : 10,000円 / 一万円 (Ichiman-en ) 

• 15,000 yen : 15,000円  / 一万五千円 (Ichiman gosen-en )

• Tip: Many restaurants in Japan now use QR codes for menus. If you see one on the table, try scanning it with your phone. 

3. Requesting a Specific Table  / 席の希望を伝えるとき

1. "Is there a table available near the window?"

   • Japanese: 窓際の席は空いていますか？

   • Reading: Mado-giwa no seki wa aite imasu ka? 

2.  A counter seat, please. 

   • Japanese: カウンターでお願いします。  

   • Reading: Kauntā de onegai-shimasu.

3. Is there a table available? 

   • Japanese: テーブルは空いていますか？ 

   • Reading: Tēburu wa aite imasu ka? 

• Key Vocabulary / 単語: 

  1. Near the window 窓際 「Madogiwa」

  2. Seat / Table 席 「Seki」

  3. Is it available? 空いていますか？ 「Aite imasu ka?」

  4. Is there...? / Do you have...? ありますか？ 「Arimasu ka?」

  5. Full / No vacancy 満席 「Manseki」

• Tip: If the restaurant is crowded, the staff might say "Man-seki desū" (Full) while making an "X" sign with their fingers.
