Plastic Bag Fee (袋の有料化): Almost all stores now charge a small fee (usually 3–5 yen) for plastic bags.
The Tray System (カルトン): Place your money or card on the small tray provided at the register, rather than handing it directly to the staff.
Point Cards (ポイントカード): Staff will almost always ask if you have a point card. You can simply say, "Arimasen" (I don't have one).
The Plastic Bag Fee: Since 2020, almost all stores in Japan charge a small fee (3-5 yen) for plastic bags. It's helpful to carry a reusable "Eco-bag."
The Payment Tray (Carton): At the register, place your money or card on the small tray provided rather than handing it directly to the staff. This is a standard Japanese etiquette.
Point Cards: Staff will often ask, "Pointo kādo wa omochi desu ka?" (Do you have a point card?). Unless you live in Japan, you can simply say, "Arimasen" (I don't have one).
